During each session children in the Butterfly Room have free flow, where they are able to access the outdoor area whenever they choose. They have regular opportunities to join our story and song blanket sessions where practitioners focus on language, listening and communication skills and can participate in exciting activities such as loose parts play, digging in our mud kitchen and growing their own vegetables for snack in our vegetable patch.
Continuing our support in the children’s journey to school the Butterfly Room continues building on key skills with the children by further promoting independence. The children continue to self-register when they arrive, have access to their own coat pegs, drink bottles etc and are encouraged to put their own coats and shoes on, with guidance and support. Children are able to choose to free-flow in and out of the garden and are given a choice of what they would like at snack time. They are also supported and encouraged with independent handwashing and using flannels to clean their faces after meals and use real cutlery and china plates at meal times.
For children showing a readiness for toileting the staff are there to provide support and guidance, where necessary, and continue the routines families have established at home. We are fortunate to have purpose built toilets and sensor taps which are ideal for children beginning their toilet training journey and promote independence and confidence. Our carefully chosen changing unit also promotes independence as children climb the steps themselves to access it.
The Butterfly Room staff pride themselves on the excellent relationships they build with our families as well as our children. They continue the wonderful work that is started in the Ladybird and Caterpillar Rooms and take their role as educators and care givers very seriously.
